Global Collaboration Services
The DCN/ICN is an Information Technology infrastructure that uses the "Internet" as a
backbone to encourage and provide Defense wide (DCN) and World-Wide (ICN) collaboration
and CALS specific information services concerning all aspects of the "CALS"
Strategy. Our services include:
- Core Collaboration Services
- Core Information Services
- CorePlus Collaboration Services, and
- CorePlus Information Services
One may think of us as an Electronic Brokerage house
that
- Interconnects, adapts, and facilitates services, and
- Brings together various pieces of multiple information
products and provides a common interface to these services without modifying the
information product or the remote applications that may seek to utilize our DCN/ICN
services.
Core Collaboration Services
The Core Collaboration Services include:
- Electronic Mail
- Public Text Conferences containing User Help and Security Forums
- Threaded Text Conferences for Pilot Program Groups
- File Sharing
- Exploder Mail Lists for Selected Pilot Programs.
The Pilot Program Groups include:
- DCN/ICN Intranet Conference for DCN/ICN developers and support personnel
- IETM Working Group Conference for Work by the DoD ETM/IETM Technology Working Group
- US DoD CALS Coordinating Group Conference
- NATO CALS Framework Conference
- US Association for Enterprise Integration Policy Board Conference
- US AFEI Lite 2000 Conference
- International Thrust Team Conference
- International High Level Steering Group Conference
- US DoD Military Service Type Designation Automation System Conference
- .US DoD Configuration Management Conference, and
- .US DoD Virtual Parts Supply Base Conference.
- .CEFACT Business Analysis Working Group
Currently membership to these Pilot Program Groups and access
to their conferences is restricted to designated members. A user identifier and password
is required to access the text conferences and other services.
Core Information Services
The Core Information Services contains web-based, CALS
specific information on
- CALS Interest Organizations, including DoD, international and
industry organizations A user will have the capability to access these organization two
ways - through a White Pages Service where the name or prefix of the name is known, and
through a yellow pages services where a capability or business area (e.g., companies or
government organizations in an area like electronic commerce, STEP, or agile
manufacturing).
- Training information on Core Collaboration and Information
Services as well as FAQs, and Feedback This information is available at our
Management Operations Control Center (MOCC) as well as our Training Directory
- A Smart Search Tool (Infominer) for finding information on the Internet
- CALS Initiatives and Implementations - a directory to Internet
accessible CALS initiatives and other pilot programs such as Integrated Data Environment,
and Electronic Technical Manual implementations, and
- CALS Publications and Repositories - containing CALS standards
and related information technology standards - a directory to CALS related standards at
DISA, NIST, UN/EDIFACT, ANSI X12, and the ISO, as well as sites containing information on
CALS, STEP, electronic commerce and Concurrent Engineering.
CorePlus Collaboration Services
The CorePlus Collaboration Services currently under development include:
- Comment/Annotation on specified documents
- Voting - yes/no/abstain on specified issues
- Application Sharing - even when only one collaborator has the application
- Whiteboard - for brainstorming, sketching ideas
- Text chatting - real-time collaboration via your keyboard (input) and text chat windows (display).
- Audio and video - if your PC has the additional hardware (sound board, speakers, microphone, and desktop camera)
- Virtual reality modeling collaboration - for high end personal
computers with high bandwidth access to the Internet - may be used for form and fit
perspectives such as layout of equipment in a compartment; and simulation, and
- Media Streaming (Audio and Video)
CorePlus Information Services
The CorePlus Information Services currently under development
include:
- Calendar of CALS related Events
- CALS Technologies, including technologies supporting acquisition, engineering, manufacturing,
logistics, test and evaluation, and operations and support
- CALS Partnership - search for potential teammates in a virtual
enterprise to participate in a joint proposal or business opportunity
- CALS Specialists -search for individuals with specific CALS related skills
- CALS Test and Certification - search web based directories for
CALS test and certification suites, services or requirements
- Information Dissemination - register your interest in specific
CALS information domain and receive alerts when new information is available on line.
- CALS and Internet security - find information on CALS and
Internet security plans, policies, products and services.
Other DCN/ICN Services
The Other DCN/ICN Services currently under development include:
- Advertising - as we transition to a self sustaining service
- Help Desk - for end users to solve installation and
operational problems, and
- Internet Hardware/Software Acquisition/Installation - a one
stop shop.
