Q+A Profile - Data and AI

Michael Purdy - Director and Lead, Data and AI Solution Planning
Question 1.
What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about using data, analytics, and AI to solve complex problems that directly impact mission success. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on applying emerging technologies to real-world challenges, delivering actionable insights that make a difference.

Question 2.
What drew you to MANTECH?

MANTECH’s commitment to national security, innovation, and its focus on supporting the client’s mission strongly resonated with me. I was drawn to the opportunity to build and grow a Data and AI practice that directly supports critical government missions with leading-edge technology.

Question 3.
What do you like most about MANTECH?

The people and the purpose. MANTECH fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. I enjoy working with talented teams who are just as passionate about technology and mission impact as I am.

Question 4.
What is or has been the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

One standout project was leading an AI pilot for the Department of Defense. We implemented a customized AI solution inspired by a well-known system capable of understanding and responding to complex natural language queries, introducing this advanced capability into a traditionally manual environment. It was a unique experience that showcased how AI can enhance national defense operations in innovative and impactful ways.

Question 5.
What advice do you have for those looking to start a career in Data and AI?

Stay curious and keep building your skills. Focus on fundamentals like data modeling and critical thinking but also work on communicating insights clearly. Real-world impact comes from applying technology to mission needs, not just mastering tools.

Question 6.
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on now?

Currently, my team and I are focused on developing autonomous AI agents. These agents have the remarkable ability to solve problems without human intervention and collaborate with other agents or applications to deliver sophisticated solutions all while operating within a human-defined context defined by guardrails coded into the agents that prevent the agents from completing tasks humans dont believe agents should act upon. The potential impact of this agent-based approach to solve our customers problems is immense. We are continuously pushing the limits of what these agents can achieve. We have found that tasks that typically take a team of developers months to complete are now being accomplished using agents in just a few days. What’s particularly exciting is that this innovation shifts AI from the front end, where humans usually interact with it, to the backend, letting enterprise systems join in the Generative AI revolution.

Question 7.
How do you balance career and home life?

Balancing both is about being intentional. I focus on delivering results at work but make it a priority to be present with family during personal time. Setting clear boundaries helps me recharge and stay effective.

Question 8.
What’s your favorite place in the world?

Home in Northern Virginia, surrounded by family and friends.

The potential impact of this agent-based approach to solve our customers problems is immense. We are continuously pushing the limits of what these agents can achieve. We have found that tasks that typically take a team of developers months to complete are now being accomplished using agents in just a few days.
