The 2019 Executive Order on Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence (AI) emphasized that achieving and maintaining global leadership in AI is an urgent national security imperative.
As rapid advancements in AI technologies such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, speech recognition, natural language processing, computer vision, and autonomous systems continue to push the state-of-the-art, the Intelligence Community (IC) and the Department of Defense (DoD) must keep pace.
Research is at the forefront of this effort, championing AI research in both foundational science and applied solutions.
This effort is to support the advancement of the state-of-the-art in AI technologies through research, development, deployment, and maintenance of cutting-edge solutions. At a minimum, this effort will encompass:

Exploring and evaluating pioneering AI approaches.

Designing, testing, evaluating, and fielding new AI-driven systems and analytics.

Developing and implementing strategies that enable the creation of AI systems that maximize accuracy, functionality, and performance.
