An Interview with ManTech Employee, Frank

Title and Job Description: Technical Publications Manager. I’m a technical writer, editor of the MCIS Spotlight newsletter, and an editor on the Proposal Production team.
Time at ManTech: 15 years

What drew you to ManTech?

Frank Voltz

My first manager at ManTech recruited me from the company where we both worked previously. When she left the previous company, she said, “Once I get settled at ManTech, I’m going to find a place for you because you’re a great employee and do great work.” A few months later, she called and said, “ManTech’s a great company. Are you ready to come join us?” and I responded, “Yes!”

What is or has been the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

The more challenging opportunities are also the most interesting and fun. I think the contract that I supported the longest is WARS (formerly EBS, formerly BAMOM). The contract is all about procurement, which I knew nothing about. I worked on EBS and BAMOM for several years and continued to learn more and more about procurement. The more knowledgeable I became, the more I enjoyed the work.

How do you balance career and home life?

In 2009, I moved from Fairfax to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Although I was prepared to leave ManTech, my manager at that time didn’t want to lose me. “You can manage your team from home. I know you’ll figure it out.” I was thrilled he trusted and valued me so much. Also, I am blessed to have two careers. As a telecommuter for ManTech, I work independently at home, and as a musician, I play concerts all over the country. When I’m home, I enjoy working with my teammates and being focused, yet working alone with minimal opportunity to be social. Many weekends, I’m on the road performing and meeting people, which gives me a social outlet. I have the best of both worlds. What advice do you have for prospective ManTech candidates?

Accept and enjoy your current assignment, but always keep your eyes open for new opportunities within the company. Choose wisely and your career will take you far beyond your dreams.

What’s your favorite place in the world?

We take a Caribbean cruise annually, usually around February when the stateside weather is cold and dreary. Over the years, the islands start to look alike. But who cares? You’re in the Caribbean with beautiful weather and surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and beautiful blue water. For the past 3 years, my sister and her husband have joined us on our cruises, and we’ve enjoyed “showing them around” the Caribbean.

What do you like most about ManTech?

ManTech gives you freedom. Once you begin your first assignment and reach a level of competence, you can take advantage of the Mobility Program and other opportunities to take your next career step. ManTech also provides educational opportunities to boost and advance your career. Some companies don’t give you that freedom.

What is the coolest thing about what you’re working on now?

Currently, I’m an editor on the Proposal Production Team. It is very exciting to find out ManTech has been awarded a contract based on the proposal that I edited. Also, I have been the editor of the MCIS Spotlight newsletter for 15 years. I enjoy it and still have fun with it because every month is a new beginning.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Since I'm always busy during the month of December playing harp, organ, or piano for holiday and Christmas performances; our family gets together for Thanksgiving. Our mother passed away in July, so now my siblings and I are more motivated to get together at least once a year. We take turns hosting the holiday dinner -- this year at our house.
